Tutorial: Felted Wool Brooch

Today’s tutorial comes from Mitsy of Art Mind and it is one we’re very excited about. Art Mind offers some of the coolest felt creations we’ve seen, including jewelry, coasters, and tiny greetings. Here at craftershock, we love felt and even more, we love felted wool. Today, we’ll show you how to create your very own felted wool flower brooch. Here’s a shot of the finished product:

Let’s get started!

Materials needed:
» Wool roving
» Soap flakes
» Olive soap (not necessary, but preferred)
» Glass and spoon
» Bubblewrap
» Sewing thread
» Sewing needle
» A decorative bead
» A brooch pin

Step 1
Hold the end of the wool roving loosely in one hand and gently pull off a section with your other hand. Hold your four fingers against the pad of your palm and trapping the wool there. Lay it horizontally on the bubblewrap.

Step 2
Put another thin layer of felt on the little square vertically. That way the fibers will be in the opposite direction to the fibers on the first layer. Repeat this until you have four thin layers of wool put onto each other. You can use different colors to have more variation.

Step 3
Put some soap flakes in a glass and pour hot water over it.

Step 4
Sprinkle, with the spoon, some of the soapy water over the felt you laid out.

Step 5
Push the soapy water gently into the wool roving and rub gently in circles.

The fibers will attach to each other and form a solid piece of felt.

Step 6
Repeating the previous steps, make three squares in total. Lay out the roving in different sizes so that you have three different size squares.
TIP: Cut out three different squares out of paper and put them underneath the bubble wrap so you can see through and lay out your wool on them as a guide.

Step 7
Rinse the felted material underneath running water and lay out to dry.

Step 8
Put the three felted squares onto each other. Now grab your sewing thread, needle, bead, and brooch pin.

Step 9
Fold the three squares in half together and sew them together at the back.

Step 10
Sew the bead in the middle of the squares by going from the front to the back.

Step 11
Sew the brooch pin at the back.

Voila! You’ve made your very own felted wool brooch!

We’d love to see your finished products! Upload photos of your brooch to The craftershock Flickr Group!
